Our Composts and Growing Media

We sell 8 different top quality composts, which we also use at the nursery to grow our plants in. Below is a list of the composts we sell at Hambledon Plants (available to purchase collect from our site only)

ECO MULTIPURPOSE COMPOST (Country Care) £5.00/bag

A blend of natural composts and peat ideal for seeding, cutting and containers. It provides a neutral and stable growing medium for seeds and young plants.

HORSE COMPOST (Country Care) £3.50/bag

This horse compost is sterilised, well-rotted and contains an excellent source of nutrient rich nitrogen phosphates and potash. The organic content puts body back into soil and improves humus, fertility and water retention while also improving drainage and soil aeration.

MUSHROOM COMPOST (Country Care) £3.50/bag

Mushroom compost is a great natural soil improver which is excellent for breaking up heavy clay soils, adding organic matter to lifeless sandy soils and for mulching vegetable beds in particular. However, it isn’t recommended if you have soil with a high alkaline content.

ECO MULCH (Country Care) £5.50/bag

A whole tree mixture of finely chopped wood and bark. Ideal for mulching borders as well as raspberry canes and the like.

TOP SOIL (Country Care) £3.50/bag

This high quality topsoil provides consistency and fertility for ideal growing conditions. It is ideal for building up flower beds and encouraging strong and healthy growth. An ideal medium for seeding, laying turf and for new or existing flower beds.

PEAT-FREE MULTIPURPOSE COMPOST (Sylvagrow) £8.00/bag

Endorsed by the RHS, this peat-free compost is a sustainable growing medium for gardeners who are as passionate about the environment as their gardens.

A unique blend of coir (from a single, known source) and fine bark and wood fibre (by-products of sustainably managed British forests), the superb-quality compost is widely used by professional growers.

Each bag contains balanced nutrients sufficient for the first 4-6 weeks of growth. Suitable for a wide range of garden applications including potting on, planting out, and as a growbag.

MODULAR SEED COMPOST (Sinclair) £10.00/bag

A low-nutrient peat reduced growing media suitable for raising transplants, seed sowing and rooting cuttings. It is free flowing for easy filling of modular trays and cells as well as small pots. Fine grade mix ensures rapid rooting and lower porosity encourages moisture retention.

STRAW MULCH (Strulch) £8.50/bag

Strulch ® is a light and easy to use garden mulch made from wheat straw for organic gardening. Strulch inhibits weed germination and growth by blocking out light. The mineralisation process inhibits the rate at which the straw breaks down and, depending on the application rate and local conditions, can last for up to two years thus spreading the cost by saving water and fertiliser and helping your plants grow healthier and stronger. These properties, together with embedded minerals, which also discourage slugs and snails.

Strulch has a neutral pH and can be used throughout the garden on borders, raised beds, around cultivated fruit and on vegetable plots.

It reduces weed growth by up to 95% and helps to retain moisture around plants while enriching the soil and its structure.
